I frequently find Staurodesmus dejectus f. apiculatus in the Simmelried, but the species was also very common in the pond in St. Ulrich (Austria). In contrast to the basic form Staurodesmus dejectus, the short spines on the sides do not point diagonally outward, but almost vertically upward (s. fig. 1 a). In addition, the apices of Staurodesmus dejectus f. apiculatus are more rounded and the cell shape is somewhat more compact.
