The Schwemm is a large moorland area in the Chiemgau Alps in Austria with an area of 65 hectares in North Tyrol. The village of Walchsee is only 1.5 km south-east of the Schwemm. In 2003, the Schwemm was declared a Natura 2000 area and in 2009 it was finally declared a nature reserve.
The Schwemm is the remains of a silted-up lake that formed between two moraines after the last glacial period. The Ramsbach stream flowed through the lake. The south-eastern part of the lake was cut off by sediments deposited by the Ramsbach stream. This part is today’s Walchsee, while the north-western part silted up to form a moor complex consisting of a central raised bog surrounded by intermediate bogs and marshy meadows.
